A meets vs. B meets

There are two different competitive levels at Palisades.  Any child who wishes to swim in a B meet may sign up to do so.  Participation in A meets (and Relay Carnival and Divisionals), however, are by invitation.  B meets are held on Wednesdays in the afternoon through early evening. A meets are on Saturday mornings. Swimmers are allowed (and encouraged) to participate in both types of meets if they can.

B Meets

Each week there will be a sign up sheet for the upcoming B meets posted at the pool on the swim team board. Swimmers are allowed to sign up for any events in their age group that they choose except for those in which they placed 1st-3rd in the previous A meet.

Swimmers who place 1st-3rd in an event in an A meet and want to swim that stroke in the B meet for racing can “swim up”  -- that is, swim the stroke but in an older age group.  In a B meet, a child can swim up in some events but not others.  Swim-up times are unofficial, so, for example, if an 8 & Under swims up in the backstroke in the 9-10 age group, the time won’t change his/her recorded best time.] Distances differ between age groups, so please check before taking this option.

There is NO practice on Wednesday afternoons because of the B meets, but swimmers should be at the pool for warm-ups at 4:50 for home meets and 5:20 for meets at other pools.

A Meets

Phone calls inviting children to swim in the Saturday A meets will be placed each preceding Thursday.  If your family is going to be out of town for an A meet, there is a sheet on the swim team board where we ask that you indicate when you’ll be unavailable.  Also, if you will be unreachable before an A meet, please let us know that as well.  If we don’t hear back from you confirming that your child can swim before Friday morning, s/he will not be entered in the meet.

For 8 & unders and 9-10s, we enter 6 swimmers in the freestyle event and 3 swimmers in the other 3 events (backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly).  In the older age groups, we only enter 3 swimmers per event.  For the 12 & under, 13-14, and 15-18 Individual Medley, there also are only 3 swimmers entered.  Children are only allowed to swim 3 individual events, the IM, and a relay, so even if your child is not listed in the top few spots in the ‘top times’ report (which will be posted at the pool weekly) don’t count them out from being asked to swim in an A meet.
